I arrived at Mono Lake Friday about 2 hours before sunrise and was the only one there. This was great, although a bit creepy, as I could do what I wanted without dealing with other photographers. Using a super wide angle lens, I was able to make a number of attempts, which was necessary as I really wasn't totally sure what I was doing. As you hold the camera shutter open for about 30 seconds, you slowly pan a flashlight beam over the subject. The trick is just how many pans you make with the light. Trial and error, for sure.
Of the two photos below, one was done when it was absolutely dark and the other when it seemed dark but there was just enough light to result in a navy blue sky. You see stars in both and it is just a matter of personal taste which one you might like more. I think I can call this first attempt at light painting a success and it was fun to get back to the computer and see if it worked. I learned a bunch about this technique and look forward to doing more. The key is finding a good subject for it.
This was my first trip alone and it was a different experience. You wind up talking to yourself which was fine until we had a disagreement and were no longer on speaking terms. I wound up listening to the radio more after that.
The next expedition will be to Antarctica with Jen at the end of December. This is the big one. The good news is I won't have to rely on talking to myself.
