Death Valley and Desert Rats

Jason and I arrived in Las Vegas Thursday (and quickly got out of town per the wife’s orders) and headed to Death Valley National Park. On the drive out, I was wondering if we were going to find much to photograph as the landscape along the way was not very impressive. As soon as we crossed the park boundary everything changed.
Yes, Death Valley has its share of a vast open desert that doesn’t make a great photograph but there are also areas where colors and textures are everywhere. I was joking before leaving home that I was going off to photograph dirt. Maybe so, but there is some dang good looking dirt here.
We got in a nice sunset image on Thursday and have been all over the park since. The wind picked up to 30mph on Saturday which was problematic as blowing sand and camera gear is not a good mix so we retreated to the room for most of the day. The good news is the wind will clean the foot prints off the sand dunes which we will be photographing soon.
Those that continue to return here year after year to photograph are called “desert rats”. I can see already there is far more to do here than can be done in one trip. I am beginning to understand the “rats”.
The photos in this blog entry give you an idea of some of the colors and textures. In the next entry I hope to be able to show some images of the sand dunes and the salt flats.
