Death Valley Dunes and Salt Flats

On Sunday morning the light lasted only long enough for one image at Mesquite Dunes before the overcast skies set in and sent us packing. We returned on Tuesday morning and had some nice early light to give us the contrasts on the sand that we were looking for and I am thrilled with what we have been able to photograph there. There are more footprints in the sand from others than I would like but I can live with it. These sand dunes are where the desert scenes of the first Star Wars movie were filmed. Jason headed for the peak of the tallest dune going up the hard way. I guess its what boys do so I included an image of his ascent.
One of the other photographic subjects here are the salt flats at Badwater Basin. The basin is 282 feet below sea level. You have to hike out a couple of miles to get to where the good clean patterns are but it is well worth it. Once the sun goes down, you get a blue cast on the flats but I like the look of that too. I've been out there twice and still looking for an image with more sunset color.
Also included is an image at Salt Creek with the impending rain clouds in the background. Just for fun I included an image from the local gas station. When the nearest town with gas is 60 miles away, this is what happens.
Tomorrow is a big day as we will depart at 3AM to head to the Racetrack to photograph the famous rocks in early light. We had to rent a jeep for the day as the road there is a rough 4 wheel drive only road not designed for regular vehicles. This is the real highlight of the trip, what everyone comes here for.
Need to go to bed now. The 2am alarm clock is looming.
