Oregon Coast and Seal Pups

Jason and I arrived in Portland on Thursday afternoon and made our way to Newport, our first stop on the Oregon coast. The goal is to try to capture some of the beautiful rock formations on the coast along with lighthouses and a variety marine life.

The day begins at 4:30am in order to make it to one of the beach locations for sunrise. Although the sun rises in the east, it can provide some nice color in the west behind some of the rock formations. The harbor seals have recently given birth to their pups and they are just adorable. They keep them pretty far away but with the big 800mm lens and extenders I got some very nice images. One young pup grabbed some kelp and was throwing it up in the air which was really cool. He only did it once and I just happened to have the lens trained on him. Sometimes you just get lucky.

When the tide goes out, you can walk out among the rocks and photograph some of the colorful sealife that is still underwater in shallow pools called tidepools. The trick is not to fall on the slippery rocks and break bones or camera gear, which is something that happens often according to park rangers. I vow not to be another statistic.

There is no self serve gas in Oregon, which I guess keeps jobs, and the signs say speeding tickets are $97. Are they trying to make it look like a good deal instead of being a full $100?? Go ahead and speed, its only $97!!

We left Newport Sunday and headed further south to Bandon, the captial of offshore rock formations. The fog and rain has moved in so we have some challenges. We may just have to get a little more creative. Stay tuned.

Below are 11 images from Newport. The closeup of the seal with her pup is my favorite.
